Diet food

The diet food that you take in while on the macrobiotic diet is going to be primarily fresh and grown as locally as possible. The diet food that makes up the base of this diet are fruits and vegetables supplemented with other non-processed choices to help you meet your nutrient needs.

The diet food recommendations that you should aim to try and follow include:

  • keeping whole grains as about 50-60% of your total intake at each meal. This includes things like brown rice, whole wheat bread, barley, rye, rolled oats and whole wheat pasta
  • trying to eat one to two cups of miso or shoyu sup per day
  • increasing vegetable intake so it makes up at least 30% of your intake. These vegetables should be steamed, boiled or baked
  • having beans or bean products provide the remaining 10% of your diet.
  • Avoiding animal based products like meat, poultry, eggs and dairy
  • Using seeds and nuts in moderate amounts; only used to add flavour to dishes
  • Encouraging the consumption of apples and dried fruit for dessert rather than candy or chocolate
  • Using more natural condiments like sea salt, brown rice vinegar, grated ginger root and roasted seaweed

Finally, you want to try and consume as much fresh fruit as possible as stated above. This would include choices like apples, pears, peaches, apricots, grapes, berries and melons. Fruits that come from other parts of the world are to be avoided.
