Vitamin B6

The nutrient named vitamin B6, also known as Pyridoxine, works in conjunction with Pyridoxal and Pyridoxamine.

The main function of vitamin B6 is to work in the body to balance the sodium and potassium levels by way of the sodium-potassium pump, which serves to ensure proper nervous system transmission and muscle function.

Vitamin B6 also helps to promote the development of red blood cells, which are responsible for transporting oxygen throughout the body as well as helps to decrease the formation of homocysteine, a substance associated with poor cardiovascular health.

If you not getting enough vitamin B6 on a daily basis you may start to see issues such as anemia, nerve damage, seizures, various skin issues and potentially sores around or in the mouth. Women in particularly are susceptible to developing anemia since they lose a small amount of blood each month. For this reason, it is very important they are looking into their diets to ensure they are getting a high enough intake. In addition to getting enough Pyridoxine, women should be taking care to get enough iron as well as these two will work in conjunction to prevent this condition.

This nutrient is also required for the production of serotonin, dopamine, noradrenaline and adrenaline, all of which are neurotransmitters in the body. Without these substances, increased rates of depression and anxiety can be seen.

Good sources of this nutrient include beans, nuts, eggs, meat, fish, legumes, whole grain products and some fortified cereals.
