Dr. Atkins diet plan

The name of Dr. Robert C. Atkins will be forever associated with the diet that bears his name.

Dr. Atkins was an American physician and cardiologist who died in 2003. The diet that he conceived is a controversial low carbohydrate plan that involves severely restricting carbohydrate intake, while eating a liberal amount of meat, fish, shellfish, fowl, cheese and eggs.

Dr. Atkins published his first "Diet Revolution" in 1972, which was subsequently revised in the "New Diet Revolution". Based on his work as a physician, he believed that the main cause of obesity in Western societies is eating refined carbohydrates, (especially sugar, flour, and high-fructose corn syrups), and that the role of saturated fat as a cause of obesity was overstated - although he did advocate avoiding trans fats such as hydrogenated oils.

The range of books has expanded to include various cookbooks, carb counters, journals and so on, all of which can help you to follow the diet successfully.

Although this is a controversial plan, millions of people have successfully used it to lose weight. In addition, there are also those in the medical community who support his theories. If you have tried and failed on other diets, you might want to consider this approach.
