Defining fitness is hard. Everyone uses the word, but few really know what it means. There are three main elements to fitness - cardiovascular, strength, and flexibility - and your workouts should be designed to improve all three.
Cardiovascular workouts are those that build the heart and lungs - running, biking, swimming etc - while strength comes from progressive resistance workouts. Stretching regularly at the end of your workouts will improve your flexibility.
