Glycemic index

If you are going to adopt a low protein diet, keeping in mind the glycemic index is even more important for you than those who use a higher protein approach.

The reason why you must focus on the glycemic index is because since you will not be eating as much protein, you'll likely be taking in more carbohydrate rich foods.

Carbohydrates are the foods that are going to send your blood sugar levels increasing and then crashing if you are not eating the right ones and in combination with protein or fat. Since protein is lowered, as you can see it becomes important which type of carbohydrates you are eating to avoid this blood sugar fluctuation.

The glycemic index is what is going to tell you how much of a change in blood sugar you will experience after eating a given amount of carbohydrate rich foods. Trying to consume as many foods that are lower on this measure is going to be the best way to keep your energy levels more stable and hunger under control.

Furthermore, remember that if you make an effort to combine some fat along with the carbohydrates you take in during the meal then that will also help to slow their release in the body. So for example, instead of just having some pasta and tomato sauce for dinner, have some pasta, tomato sauce along with some sprinkled nuts on top. This simple addition will really make a difference in how your body feels and functions.
